Default What's your beater

Okay, reading around what everyone else is driving during the winter months started me thinking about whether there is a particular pattern in what people drive as their run-of-the-mill, day-to-day runabout.

So let's see what everyone is driving - and what you like/dislike about it

I'll start:

Mrs. U. has our Ford Ka 1.3, 52 plate (purchased December 2002).
Pros:
  • Outran a Rover ZS from the lights yesterday
  • The tyres tell you when they're approaching the limit
  • Can maintain 95 *cough* ph in the right conditions
  • Generally pretty good for loading stuff up for the tip (with the seats down)
Cons:
  • A bit rolly around the corners, but still fun
  • Isn't going to be much use once the family comes along; only two door.
  • Less boot space than the S!

Me? I have the finest trains in Britain...if I'm lucky!

So what do YOU drive?

106 Rallye Mk1
40mpg on a run
cheap insurance
out handles almost everything on the road, and I mean that
rare a rocking horse dung(no depreciation at all)

downside:

noisy on a run and not a motorway cruiser
bit chavy, but people do look at it who know(have seen people looking in the window when parked in a carparks etc)

Citroen XM 98 on a R

Tows the horse trailer , cost next to nothing to buy , now on my 3rd

They dont need to be serviced and horses can kick them .
Cruises effortless at 100+ on the motorways and sticks with anything (within reason ) in the twisties .
They can park anywhere

Cons

Absolutely no street cred whatsoever

All 3 have needed a clutch at 100k

Need to shovel the mud out every 3 months

I've got a '97 Renault Laguna.

Pros:
It moves both forwards and backwards in the snow.
Comes with a few toys, ew, em, esr, ps, cl.
Big and roomy for when I want to lug people or stuff around.
Cheaper to buy than the equivalent Mondeo.
It makes me appreciate how good the S is when I get back into it.

Cons:
Handles like a blancmange.

When I sell my Audi and get my S I'll use my other set of wheels as my beater. Its a W reg Mercedes Sprinter van converted into a camper van. Used for surfing/mountain biking holidays and weekends away.

Pro's :
Comfy bed which sleeps 2
Has a cooker, fridge, water tank and roof lights
Don't mind too much if it gets dinged in the Supermarket car park
Loads of cargo space for trips to the dump and picking up stuff from B&Q
Stores surfboards and mountain bikes out of site
Cruises happily at 90mph

Cons :
Bit big for small parking places
Don't like leaving anywhere 'dodgy' in case some nutter thinks its full of goodies
Bit thirsty
Expensive to insure
Takes up a lot of driveway space

My other toy

Pros

It is faster than *any* car on the road to 100mph
It doesn't have to wait behind cars at traffic queues
It doesn't cost anything to park
It is great fun

Cons

It isn't so much fun in heavy rain or extremely cold conditions

This:

Daimler Double Six 6.0 litre V12

Pros

What an engine!
As comfortable as anything
All the toys
As fast as you need (in a straight line)
Most s/h spares cost peanuts
Handles better than you'd think
Depreciation pretty much over
Baiting and killing Mercs, BMWs and hot hatches (even TDis )

Cons

16 mpg
