Default Wheel brands of distinction?

I'm taking a look at a car this week and I'm already thinking ahead. I've been looking at a couple of websites for wheels, but who knows which brands are worth it and which not? Definitely not me! At www.alloywheels.com they have a number of different brands and ordinarily I would choose OZ... but there are cheaper brands too.

Can anyone recommends brands to consider / not to bother with as I know that you can often find a decent product with a lesser known name. The style I am after is to look similar to the MY04s. Currently seen 17" OZ Ultraleggera with F1GSD3s all round at

Saw you mention these in another thread.... do they come as "much cheapness" or "top dollar"? Any links to suppliers too?

Well I've been through 4 S's and 6 set of alloys

I ended up with the Volks CE28's in a custom black chrome finish

Best thing you can do is decide WHY you are changing the wheels. Cosmetics or Performance, then we can give som idea of makers to look at. Also set your self a budget

I had an MY04 in Canada and I prefered the look of the 17" compared to the 16" on my UK MY02. I certainly don't want to buy a wheel that could lead to a decrease in performance, especially in the wet.

Comparing performance between the two was not possible as the roads in Canada are long, wide and straight with low speed limits. The whole of Vancouver is 30mph and the motorway is 60mph with the RCMP hiding behind trees and boards. Even though I liked the feel of the MY04 when I drove across Canada (Montreal to Vancouver, 3000 miles) can't really compare to our faster and windier roads.

FWIW, Marc, having had an 02 with 16" wheels and an 04 with 17" wheels, I'd go for the latter every time both in terms of looks (the 99-03 car looks so under-wheeled now if you see it next to an 04+ IMO) and cold/wet weather handling.

Sets of 04 wheels come up with relative regularity on ebay so that may be worth considering - it's probably going to be a hell of a lot cheaper than going down the lovely-but-oh-so-expensive Volks route.....
