Wheel colour change - should I?

I need my wheels re-furbed, so I'm going to try a different colour finish. The short list is:

Gloss black.
Matt satin black
Charcoal/anthracite

From this company: http://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/...Fcse4QodcAebYg

BUT..... I'm worried that the black finishes will look a bit chavy and the charcoal might look odd because there's not enough of a contrast with Moonrock paint.

Anyone tried similar colours - posting pictures would be appreciated?...........

lovegroova 01-11-2011 10:01 AM

Nail on the head there with regards to contrast. Moonrock is neither dark nor light, so it's difficult.

Something silly like green or orange is what's required for a contrast. Perhaps one of the half and half finishes might work best? See what The Loon did here: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showt...post&p=20058034

GaryB 01-11-2011 10:03 AM

I was thinking exactly the same thing this weekend re my 17's.

They desperately need a refurb and I was thinking satin black although mine is Silverstone.

Thats a pic of my oem 05' alloys done gloss black.

I know its easy to put black wheels on a white car, but i thought it would give you some insight into how they look when gloss black.

Not sure what colour I would go given your situation, white maybe? and live with them being filthy as soon as you start the car after cleaning them? :D

Madfish 01-11-2011 10:22 AM

Here's my black with graphite...

I'm actually thinking of changing the wheels now for something in silver with a dish :)

Fatbloke 01-11-2011 10:22 AM

I want the car to look obviously different to standard, but at the same time, I still want it to look like a 40 year old's car, not a young un's 'ride'. No disrespect to the younger fraternity, you guys can just get away with something more outrageous without everyone taking the mick because you're having a midlife crisis.

I love gloss black, but I'm not sure if I just love them on someone else's car, if you get what I mean..........

s2000malta 01-11-2011 10:47 AM

On a Moonrock i was buying i was seriously considering painting the wheels in a dark BMW grey.

Similar to this:

http://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/Image/alloy17.jpg

Wheel + darker OEM HONDA badges will make the car look perfect.

Good luck!

Yes and no. ;) They're gloss black, but dirty practically all of the time. Actually I was going to go for matt black, and the refurbers (Pristine in MK) talked me out of it and said I'd regret it. But to be honest I don't think they look as good when they're clean and shiny as when they're dirty and have more of a matt appearance.

I copied somebody with a moonrock. I can't remember who, but he was at a Donington trackday and had black wheels with the silver centre caps and nuts, and as I saw it I knew that's what I wanted to do with mine. I don't think all black looks nearly as good.

But I do like bronze wheels on Moonrock, as you can see on one of MB's many many cars on my pic.

GIXER1 01-11-2011 10:52 AM

They do a nice line in dark anthracite Ian ;) It should offer enough contrast with the Moonrock

Ok it will never look as good as on a red car but that can't be helped

gbduo 01-11-2011 10:53 AM

What does diamond cut mean?

I have been thinking of doing the same as a few on here with my 16" wheels, gloss black on the inside and then a chrome finish on the outer faces. Think it would pretty good on my black car!

Wobbly 01-11-2011 11:10 AM

They basically put the wheel on a lathe and skim the face of the wheel with a diamond tipped tool. It leaves a highly shiny finish a little bit similar to a CD.

keith2.2 01-11-2011 11:40 AM

As a homage to my Civic, I used Ford Graphite Grey on my wheels - it's a graphite colour with a nice sheen and a very slight bronzey tinge;
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2.../Photo1476.jpg

Looks like this on the car (Albeit silverstone):
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2.../Photo1491.jpg

...I know you don't want to green / orange, but I think I might know where LG got the idea from..;
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...z/IMG_0327.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...z/IMG_0326.jpg

One side and t'other on my track wheels

unclefester 01-11-2011 11:54 AM

Carrie has hers done in gloss black on 17s on a Silver car and it looks good - goes well with the pink calipers haha

Ah ok, thank you!

martin j 01-11-2011 01:19 PM

I was thinking about a dark anthracite on the faces and black(gloss or matt) on the backs, mine are 09+ btw.

Taylot 01-11-2011 01:53 PM

For me - nothing but silver works for moonrock. I've seen moonrock with dark alloys and it just doesn't work.. It ruins the look of the car for me. Also not a fan of the two tone wheels some people have done, with a darker colour on the inside of the spokes. Ruins the OEM wheels for me. Just my opinion of course.

If you do have to have another colour I would say bronze works best.

Charcoal/anthracite for me....

Pelidan 01-12-2011 03:05 AM

Smoked chrome looks good

I had my wheels refurbed in 'semi-gloss black'.

I didn't want gloss as imo it makes the tyres look really dull, but i didn't want matt as i think they look dirty all the time!

Luckily, the powder coating place offer a 'semi-gloss' option which works really well.

Just something to keep in mind if you do decide to go for black!

Your picy of interest as I have just got myself a set of 16" for winter use.
Fancy a colour change and only considering gloss black or anthracite.
Having seen the latter on a BB now fairly sure black gloss is the route to go.
BUT at all costs, even if it means retaining the existing silver, I want to avoid the immature/modded/halfrauds non OE look.
Any chance of a full on side view of your BB?

I went for gloss black on my yellow s, i did them myself it took four coats of gloss black and three coats clear before i got a deep eough shine but for £60's worth of rattle cans they came out pretty well. i would say that gloss is the way to go mate. my cars among the picks found in ere, https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=823210

How did you prep. the wheels. Wire wool?
Did you remove or mask the tyres?

Makes the car look purposeful and agressive.

It varies according to the finish you choose and if you want a complete re-furb or just a repair/touch-up, so have a look here:

http://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/...Fcse4QodcAebYg

There's an on-line quote function that e:mails you back immediately. Hours of fun......

Remember to add £5 per wheel if you want the centre caps done as well.

Hope that helps?

Hi FB - I used the same people to re-finish mine in Anthracite, they did a great job and were very helpful.

Might give them a call :)

I have a place 5 mins from me, who charged £60 per wheel for OEM refurb, but I guess that's not tooooo bad, and a straight colour change may be less as there is much less labour involved.

Thanks Loftust! I'll check them out, I think I emailed them before and it was like £50 a corner for a refurb, with 10% off that is better than a poke in the eye!

Might get the roof and wheels sorted for the summer, can't have my car showing up the other cars on the Silverstone Classic stand! Haha!
