Default Wrong tyres fitted ?

2 weeks before discovering S2KI , I had 2 new rear tyres fitted to my 04 . Having read your FAQ they appear different to what is recommended .I had fitted Bridgestone RE050 E050BZ 245 40 17 91Y.
Are they OK , not being MZ or 91W ?? How do they differ ???

You've got the wrong tyres.

The ones you've had fitted are standard fit on the Mercedes C-Class and they are a different compound.

EDIT: Actually, scratch that, it's the BZ 91W tyres that are standard fit on the Merc C-Class. You've still got the wrong ones though.

I don't know about the MZ/BZ quesiton but the 91W/91Y is the load and speed rating.

The load rating approximately parallels to how strong the sidewall of the tyre is, it's a grade of how much weight/load the tyre can take at its rated pressure.

The speed rating is an approximation of how the tyre performs at speeds. The faster a tyre goes the more it suffers vibration and heat and each tyre will be engineered to compromise heat, grip, water dispersion, wear, noise and vibration for the speed it's expected to run at.

If you know your tyre technology you can improve a vehicles performance on a track with clever tyre selection. In practice, on the public road, it's always a compromise. I'm on an '02 plate and I still have the standard 16" wheels. I choose to run the stock ES02JZ as it gives fantastic dry performance and reasonable wear. I acknowledge its known weak wet performance and just ensure that when it gets slippery (especially after dry spells) the S2k can be a handful and I don't play.

Oops. I meant to say that the '91' is the load rating and the 'W' or 'Y' is the speed rating. I don't know enough about tyre technology to suggest how they may affect performance etc. I certainly wouldn't change the load rating and Honda probably know more about compromising speed ratings than anyone on this forum does

My correspondence with Bridgestone on this matter:

Hello,

I drive a 2004 Honda S2000 that has Bridgestone Potenza RE050 (E050MZ) 245/40 R17/91W tyres fitted to the rear wheels.

I now need to replace the tyres but my local supplier only has (E050BZ) tyres in stock. All other details are the same.

I can find no useful information on your website to tell me what the difference between them is.

Could you please tell me the difference between them?

I look forward to your reply.

Best regards,

Wayne Rumley
Thank you for your mail.

The "MZ" are the recommendation for the Honda S2000, the "BZ" is the recommendation for the Mercedes "C" class.

On performance tyres especially it is important to ensure that the right fitment is used. Tyres such as these have been developed in conjunction with manufacturers to offer the best possible performance characteristics for the tyre and vehicle.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Clive Miller
