diff: i got a bottle (~1L) of mobil 1 75w90 gear oil from autozone or pepboys, ~$10.

trans: 2 bottles (~2L) of GM syncromesh: friction modified from the local chevy dealership, ~$23. make sure you bring a part number with you, or else they'll either tell you they don't have it or they'll give you the wrong bottle.

check the DIY threads in 'under the hood'.

I typically have used Redline MTF for the trans, and Mobil gear oil for the diff.

However, this past Winter I used some SuperTech branded gear oil for the diff (because I was in a pinch). Surprisingly, the rear was MUCH quieter and smoother. With the 4.77's, I plan to change the gear oil more frequently, so I may continue to use the stuff.

For the trans, I also switched over to good ole' Honda/Acura MTF that I got from the Acura dealer.

If we're still on for this weekend, I have a couple of bottles of the SuperTech gear oil if you're interested.

I was running regular Honda MTF in the tranny and could not get rid of the 2nd gear grind. Just recently changed it out for GMSMFM and the box is now smooooth like butta

I have an extra bottle of Almasol laying around -

If you check the oil journals, I think this is what xviper recommends. Anyway, I bought 2 bottles just in case I spilled or something - you only need one.

I'll sell it to you for $15 (hardtopguy price - no shipping). I might also have a couple of spare washers. Let me know.

For what it's worth, a lot of people have had similar experiences, only to have the grind come back after 10-15k miles on the GMS fluid. In some cars, it's as much about new fluid as it is about the 'right' fluid.

if it comes back after 10-15k thats fine by me, cos I change my tranny fluid every 6-7k anyway. with the honda mtf, I have the grind back after 1k miles.

I am going in for the 2004 2nd gear TSB on Monday- I typically live by redline fluids only (have their oil and diff fluids in now). Any opinions on redline MTL in our transmissions-does it help the grind?
