Checking out a car
Hi guys, I've been lurking the forums for a couple months and finally got around to selling my old car and am now on the lookout for an S2K. I spotted a nice example in Chicago (actually used to live in 630) close to the White Sox stadium, but am not sure where to have it checked out close by (I live across the country now). Any recommendations for a shop close by or someone in the area? All of the shops I've seen recommended are 40+ minutes out, the seller probably won't want to do that.

Thanks, I really appreciate your offer. It was more like there wasn't any shop known to work on the cars in the area, and a random shop is a hit or miss (even if well rated in general) IMO. Alas, the opportunity passed and the car sold. It was a 2002 in Spa with 20,000 miles for $14K. Whoever bought it had a pretty good deal if it had no issues.

That price seems sketchy to me

Yeah, I know, which is why I wouldn't buy it without an inspection. That said, the seller had a clean VIN number (I pulled the history) registered in IL with an exempt OD reading and smog checks in IL up to 2017, no sales, no accidents and was willing to take it to a local shop. I guess we'll never know unless the buyer posts here.

There are probably 50,000+ S2000s registered in the USA and some are for sale daily. Some in your phone area code and probably some in your Zipcode. In the marine (boat) sales field there are certified marine inspectors who will inspect (marine survey) and report. I've sold two and purchased one house this summer and there are real estate inspectors too. There gotta be similar services for cars.

FWIW, the poster is right. There are many car inspection services. I've purchased two S2000 for friends (one important one, my cardiologist) remotely, have agreed the inspection check list with the service prior to inspection and it all worked out great on both occasions. The last one that I did cost $179 for a car in upstate New York to be shipped to Chicagoland.
