Getting this for my car. Basically, its about $250-350 for the gps itself, but you can track your car on your computer/smartphone in 5 second increments. You get a satellite view of where you car is at all times. This is great for parents who are tracking where their kids are. Subscription is around $25-30/month. I think it's worth it if your in an area prone to theft. You can be on a trip in New York and your car can be safely parked in CA, it'll still track it. |

Easier and cheaper to find a used iPhone 3GS on craigslist or ebay; add an addtional line to a family plan (which should include a data plan too) for $10/month. Hardwire in a 12v iPhone dongle somewhere on the car; plug your phone into the dongle; hide the dongle and the phone. You can then track the phone/car using MobileMe (or for a cheaper solution: jailbreak the phone and use one of the handful of apps that can track the phone using SMS, cell triangulation, and/or WiFi connectivity). Popular places to hide a setup like this in a car: under a seat, inside a seat cushion, spare wheel well area, inside an intake box, carved into a foam tool kit holder, inside/under an air bag area; roof well area, hidden compartment..... |
... Interesting.
