The first problem is communication.

Everyone should have a radio, be it 5 people or 50 people.
You can get a 2 mile talkabout for 10$ a piece now.

It should be a requirement for these large gatherings. Buy one or dont come along.

You hit the nail on the head, large groups are hard to keep together, small drives should be the only time a 20+ caravan sticks together.

Small groups are best, and not the kind of small groups without leaders, like FWT.

We tried a huge caravan to tire tire, the last half of the group got seperated, with no leaders.

What about assigning group leaders for x amount of cars.
Like saying urmil you are responsible for car 1-10, have numbers on them. Pete you are responsible for group 11-20.

Makes it much more organized.

That's how they did it at FCT. Each group had a number (1-16 with about 10 in each)

Each had their own FRS channel

It worked out VERY well for me while filming as I bounced between groups over a 100+ mile drive. If I wasn't sure what group I was with, I scanned the channels till I found out.

Oh yeah, 2 mile range only work for about 1/2 mile in the city
2 miles means in BFE with absolutely NO interference.

I have been on drives where the leader stopped constantly to make sure everyone kept together. This was nice for the people trying to keep up, but WAY boring for 80% of the participants.
Ive done this before. I led the drive up to Urmils BBQ and then YOU (Pete) decided that you needed to fly by and "egg" on the others to do the same. Sure i stopped a couple of well thought places to make sure we all got there together, which we did. So as far as the boring statement goes, boring? Maybe. Worth it? Mos Def.

Actually I did pull over and wait at the Randall Rd exit.

I think the cruise at the BBQ was very safe, but I'm not sure about the one where a guy infront of me disappeared into the darkness and I took a 60mph U-turn ;-/

I think diving into small groups that have similar driving style to each other is a good idea. Radios definately help and it would also help if you have a passenger who can deal with phones and radios when you are lost too.

I apologize at the beginning of the ride, I got caught up in the moment. But after realizing i lost sight of the cars in front, I slowed down and checked the directions written down on the coupons and ended up leading which i never intend to. I know my way around and took the best route i could possibly think of, and to make sure the group didn't get lost i stopped and confirm with the guys in the back. Sorry Arashi for losing you on the 41 on ramp.

I suggest that on the next group drive we communicate better.

With Pete and his new vette, I think we'll need the 5 mile range version....

Motorola ones are good, they also have an electronic compass in case you lose your sense of direction and other cool features.

Many other car clubs still use CB radios, as you get significantly better range with a large group of cars....
