Default Quick question about oil filter

Right now my oil is full on the dip stick reading. My question is can I take off the oil filter and not have any oil drain out (other than only what is still in the filter)??

Need a quick answer!! Thanks!!

since the filter is a point of resistance there could be oil is waiting to be pumped thru the filter, or oil that has dripped from the cams and whatnot down to that general area.

so you stand to lose about two quarts. prolly less.

just try it, its just messy.

Others: Correct me if I'm an idiot.

Edit, actually I renig my 2 quart guess, more like one quart.

be careful and take it off slow. oil gets pumped thru the filter and unless uve started it i belive there shudnt be any or much in there.

u shudnt be able to drain much from the filter maybe 1/2 a quart.

just be careful

whatever oil that was on its way up to the head will be dripping out of the filter hole, but taht couldnt be much, I wouldnt be too suprised if it were just a half a quart.

tahts still enough oil to make a friggin mess.

Yeah, oil filter is mounted high in our cars, shouldn't be more that 1/2 quart or the total volume of the oil filter if you are quick to change. Just make sure you wipe clean all the drips since they will be much more likely to collect dirt later on, etc...

On my other car oil filter is mounted very near the bottom of the oil pan; so, you can't reasonably change the filter without changing the oil... Just depends on the particular car.

For those who are wondering (yes I know probably no one cares) The reason I had to take the filter off and not do a full oil change is because

HAHA sweet. Can't wait to see the new set up. You need to come down and visit soon. Come down on Saturday night with your girlfriend and we can make it a triple date.
