Rant on DMV
I recently sold my 2002 S2000 due to my living/parking situation and I subleased a 2003 SAAB 9-3 from a guy in Indiana via Swapalease.com (it was a very smooth transaction).
I didn't know the exact details on how the Sales/Use tax worked on subleased cars from out of state other than the credit you get for taxes already paid and I was hoping to get more information from the financial people at the DMV, after all that's all they do for a living. I knew that in IL you have to pay all of th tax up front even for a leased car (I think there's a monthly payment as well, but not sure).
The lady at the DMV financial counter told me that I'll be taxed on the initial selling price of the car. I was shocked to hear this (beacuse I would owe $1200 in tax) and I knew that she didn't know what she was talking about. I didn't pay the tax (I know it's almost impossible to get any $ back from the state) or register my car, I just picked up the forms (RUT-25) and left.
I just read the back of the RUT-25 and found out that I get a 2% depreciation allocation (credit) for each month the car has been used and I'll owe tax on "Original Price" minus "Calculated Depreciation), and as always I get a credit for taxes paid previously. I calculated my tax to $0. I work in tax and honestly I don't know all of the issues situations and tax treatments, but I'll definitely research and find out the correct answer since it's my job.
Is it too much for me to ask, if I just want the DMV financial person to just read the instructions on the form she handed me before she gave me the wrong answer w/ a
attitude?

maybe she was new and never had anyone ask about taxes on a subleased car?
Or she was a token hire for the DMV. It's hard to belive but there are people working for the government that don't know their head from their ass.

That's actually apart of the job qualification detail for most gov't posts. "...Applicants must not be able to distinguish their heads from their asses..."

She was not new cause she already had an attitude. Its funny how the 40 year olds bagging at jewel are nice and humble while the 40 year olds making the same money at the dmv pretend like they have a real job, as if they did something important and you were lucky to be served by them.
