replacing softtop (with new softtop)
Hey folks... i found a tear in my softtop in the right rear, about an inch long. Also found a TSB that describes this exact issue. I happen to have a great relationship with the honda dealership in town and they're replacing all of the locks and the top at NO COST even though the car is out of warranty.. that's outstanding!! probably scheduling it for next week, or a time when i'm traveling so i don't miss the S so much while it's in the shop. Not sure if i should hang on to the old top after they take it off. Has anyone done a top replacement before? anything to worry about? Hoping the dealership does a good job. word.. and welcome spring!
Yes, I've done three top replacments on local s2000 owners' cars. It's a pain and a half.
Double and triple check the dealer's work before you drive odd the lot. Look for taught install of the canvas top, listen for loose plastic panels, and watch for any hang ups in the tops' movement as you raise and lower the roof.
I would suggest keeping the canvas material of your original top that the dealership is taking off. The canvas can be cut into pieces and used to patch up holes in your new top as they'll reappear in time.
Also you'll be able to help out fellow owners by giving them scrap pieces if vinyl to patch and reinforce their tips as well. I know my wife's s2000 will need some soon.
Good luck with the work! BTW, care to share what dealership you are having the work done by?

Are they replacing the cage also? Make sure they fix that one part of the cage that caused the rip in the first place so it does not happen again. One other thing...remember not to open the top for a couple weeks...I had my top done a couple years ago and I remember that was one of the things they told me...I guess its to allow the canvas to stretch.

I've done my second top replacement.and can definitely agree that it is a very intense and detailed process that can be easily skimped on. Keep an eye out for everything Luder94 mentioned, and also keep your ears listening for screws or nuts that fell.
