It's general weight dependant. Most pickups are RWD. 4x4s are typically RWD until you put them in 4x4 mode, then the fronts kick on. With very little weight over the rear tires, pickups CAN be a handful in snow. I used to have a 2WD S-10 and it was so light that even with a couple of hundred pounds of sand in the bed, I spent most of the winter driving sideways. My (now departed) Silverado weighted in at almost 5,000lbs curb weight, plus it was 4x4 so it was VERY good in the snow, even in 2WD mode.

Tires can have an effect too. That S-10 I had came with Uniroyal Tiger Paws. Those were the worst tire I have ever driven on REGARDLESS OF CONDITION. I have driven cars with BALD tires that had better traction than brand-spakin-new Tiger Paws.

Yeah full sized trucks are fine in the winter. Just put into 4x4 when the going gets tough and toss 150lbs of sand all the way in the end of the bed. It is amazing how well they go through deep snow even in 2 wheel drive.

Then again, even my Grand Prix GTP went right up my driveway through 11" of snow last winter (yes, plowing snow with the under-carraige).
