Joined the SCCA yesterday and going out this weekend (Saturday) for the Autocross/Solo at the LM track.

Didn't see any other S2Ks signed up ... anyone else attending?

I also need to buy a helmet ... any suggestions for local places that have good prices?
That sounds like it'll be fun. I don't think I'll be in on that tho. I attended the Wide Open Wendsday event and it wasn't for me.

As far as helmets go, what is the LM track? Is that at Miller? If it is, you can usually rent one from them for the day.

Just need a few more S2Ks and it might be good for all of us. Actually, the Autocross group seems like a pretty good bunch of guys ... although I might need some help to whip it up on some of the Lotus drivers.

LM = Larry Miller. Figured that I would rent a helmet if I had to ... but, wanted to pick one up anyway so I don't have to worry about it for future events.

Here is the current track schedule, may be a little out of date or missing a few events:

Friday Night Laps are now only 125, and they do have instructors available. Lap Battle and the SCCA days are the ones I know the most about. I know that factory roll hoops on the S are not okay for SCCA, but they may be for Lap Battle (I know they are okay for PCA days).

If Lap Battle allows factory roll hoops, then FNL is the best deal for a first timer. SCCA is lots of fun and very well organized and only 150-165, but if you have free time from about 4pm to 9pm on a Friday night that they are having FNL, that's when I'd go.

A car in working order, an SA2005 (I think) rated helmet or newer. And that's really it. Part of "working order" may include a hard top or roll bar for an S depending on the group you go with.

I also would suggest changing your brake fluid for high heat brake fluid, regardless of the rest of your car's setup. Nothing ruins your first day out more than having your fluid boil halfway into each session...

Checked with Biggie who runs the LapBattle events and got this info:

So tell the S2000 guys they are good to go and to sign up early!
I'd go to a Friday Night Laps event (or a beginner PCA event) at least once or twice before jumping into the actual LapBattle events so that you can have an instructor and get used to being on track with other cars and such (tends to be the most nerve racking experience for most beginners, including myself, worrying about yourself in something like Autocross is one thing, worrying about the other 10-15 cars on track with you... is another). Luckily all the HPDE type events are usually super safe.

Yeah I totally agree that it can be kind of hectic for a new driver to be on the track for the first time with a bunch of cars that want to get by. That's basically how my first track day was with that GTR and the couple of gt-3s out that day. Made it worse that they would pass without a point by even in midcorner... It was a learning experience tho. I think the greatest way to learn how to become comfortable on the track ( for me atleast) was to go with someone who has been to the track a couple of times. Ask them to go slow for a few laps then as they start to go faster, just follow their line. This can be a little dangerous if they are going much faster than you can keep up, and could cause some trouble tho.
