Yeah I totally agree that it can be kind of hectic for a new driver to be on the track for the first time with a bunch of cars that want to get by. That's basically how my first track day was with that GTR and the couple of gt-3s out that day. Made it worse that they would pass without a point by even in midcorner... It was a learning experience tho. I think the greatest way to learn how to become comfortable on the track ( for me atleast) was to go with someone who has been to the track a couple of times. Ask them to go slow for a few laps then as they start to go faster, just follow their line. This can be a little dangerous if they are going much faster than you can keep up, and could cause some trouble tho.
Lead/follow time should come after you are comfortable enough to go on your own without an instructor in your car, and the first step should always be having an instructor in your car. And usually if you do a lead/follow it will be with someone who knows what to expect from your car, and will drive accordingly untill you've agreed to let them loose (which varies from time to time) Usually when I've instructed a first timer I drive their car for two laps (if they're willing, especially since I'm some young kid ) get a feel for how the car handles and what it is capable of doing and show them the basic line. Then I ride with them the rest of that session. Then depending on how they were I'll either ride with them again the whole next session, or I'll start out with a lead/follow during the next session. Most first-timers need another ride-along session. Then the third session of the day most of the people are ready to move up to "Intermediate" and I do the lead/follow (assuming I have a functioning/prepared car) for like 2-4 laps and set em loose.

Having your first day be a full on open track day with open passing would be very intense, especially since the one problem I see even from people who drive the line fairly well and drive their cars fairly quickly is having problems getting too stressed with traffic. That's another nice thing with things like Lap Battle and the different levels of SCCA etc, they allow passing only in certain spots, and always only with a point by. Often the advanced SCCA group can pass anywhere, but it still always needs a point by. We're not racing, there's no point in taking a dangerous pass and not being 150% sure the person you are passing (or being passed by) knows that it is okay to pass.

That's my girlfriend's biggest fear of taking it out to the track, she doesn't want to deal with the traffic. Hopefully an SCCA day or a Friday Night Laps day I'll be able to take her out in the car with me a few times so she can get an idea of what it's like.

Here is the current track schedule, may be a little out of date or missing a few events:

Friday Night Laps are now only 125, and they do have instructors available. Lap Battle and the SCCA days are the ones I know the most about. I know that factory roll hoops on the S are not okay for SCCA, but they are for Lap Battle and PCA.

A few pics from the lapbattle.com test and tune event. Was amazing considering it was only $125 and there were only 4.. YES FOUR cars on the entire track.. 3 of which were S2000s! oorhett's spoon hardtop s2k seemed to be having some VTEC problems but it didn't stop him from passing me up like I was sitting still! 480rider's S2000 was amazing as well. I have coilovers and a cut-off exhaust and it was still really challenging to just keep the gap small! Over all it was a really fun day. One thing that I will note... I keep hitting my keys when I heel-toe causing my engine to shut off and my steering wheel to lock in place. Scares the sh!t out of my when it happens, and it happened three times this last time out. I'm thinking some buddy club rails will fix this?

Anyway, enjoy the pics/videos.

Two videos.. One video is with the blue Lotus Elise with BFG R1 tires. The other video is me trying to keep up with 480rider:
