Default Possibly Relocating to Utah

Hi Everyone,

Lost the job about a month ago and I have some relatives who live in Layton so I might possibly be relocating to Utah in the next month or so.

Would appreciate if you could point me in the right direction on a few things I am considering....

What is the best area to look for work/live?
Is gas 91 or 93 octane?
How strict is emissions out there? If I was running ITB's?
Best places to track the S?

Thanks!

Very dependent on what you're looking for ... type of work and the type of place you want to live. Overall the Utah economy is doing better than most, which is reflected in the lower unemployment rate.

Mostly 91, but you can find some 93 and above if you're willing to drive.

There are some areas of Utah with very lax emission standards. The metro Salt Lake City area is fairly strict, but not as tight as CA. Not sure whether the ITBs will pass emissions in SLC. Are you still running stock ECU/EMS?

Best places to track the S?
Miller Motorsports Park One of the best motor sports facilities in the world.

5 yrs as a Branch Manager for a finance company so looking for something same or related field. Looking a for quiet location, but close enough to civilization.

Still running on stock, but will be upgrading to K-Pro standalone w/ ITB's.

Saw a few threads on that park so it seems that is the Go-to spot

Layton is a very nice place to live. If you're looking for something a little cheaper, you can look into Roy which isn't too far from Layton. As far as where you should work...???

I used to be a saftey and emissions technician up on HAFB. I can tell you, you won't pass emissions with your ITBs in an area that requires emission testing legally. However, if you take your car somewhere that doesn't look at vehicles very closely, they may not notice that the car is even modified. As long as you don't have a CEL and you're not hiding a CEL, then you might be able to find somewhere that will pass you without even knowing it's not legal. If you don't want to deal with emission testing, call up the emissions control center in Davis/SLC counties and ask them where emission testing is not required.

Like msm_s2k said... MILLER MOTORSPORTS PARK FTW!!! There is a thread on this utah section about Miller and has a few videos of the park.

Once you go standalone it will get a lot more difficult. You'll need to find a place where emissions is not required (generally rural counties). You can use Mugen's suggestion to find a county that doesn't require emissions or figure out how to keep your car registered where it is. I garaged a car in CA with UT registration for years; until UT started requiring more frequent emission/safety checks.

There are a fair number of banking/finance groups in the metro areas here. Good luck with the job search.

We've lived all over the US (CA, NY/NJ and KS) and UT is by far our favorite.

If I was to get a ticket for a modified/loud exhaust for example....would I need to see a referee to have it checked or is it done at the local Police Dept?

Hard to beat Socal, but CA is being run into the ground and so is the job market. Been pulled over 7-8 timed in 12mo (no moving violations, just harassment) so they can find any reason to fine me. It is certainly losing its appeal.

Wow, they definitively aren't as strict here in Utah, unless you are on a section of road that is known for street racing and it's night on a weekend i.e. washington blvd/main st/etc.. or just being stupid.

I have had a few friends here get fix-it tickets for modified exhaust, and as far as I know it's just checked at the local police dept. I used to run around in my boosted GSR civic straight dump off the turbo for about a year (terrible for the environment, i know..) with no harassment what so ever. I never (for the most part) drove like an idiot tho. I sold my civic after I was caught street racing on washington blvd in ogden and they impounded my car and I almost lost my license. They are pretty harsh on street racing here, which I'm happy they are. I could have lost my life, or more importantly taken someone elses out there.

...but you will find that some people find ways around emission testing.
