If and when you do get the parts, get the complete kit and replace all of the retainers and keepers for the intake and exhaust valves.

The cost of the kit is way cheaper then to buy the parts individually. And there is no point to replace a few retainers and then have to take the head off to replace more if they go in the future.

Lastly, get the valves checked as well. If the retainers were cracked, that might be enough movement that the valves will make contact with the top of the piston and bend the valves.

where is this kit you speak of?

I worked at honda and there was no such thing as a retainer kit.

They were sold one by one and same with the keepers.

Hardtop guy sells a kit (which he puts together using the individual parts) that includes 16 retainers, 32 cotters, and the valve cover gasket. I think that's what he is referring to.

Mr. Lahey will dig out bills tomorrow just seen the post . I think it was 478.53 plus cost of 8 retainers/keepers plus we had clutch fluid replaced.

Yes, that is what I am talking about.

Is it not possible to replace them all a cylinder at a time by bring
ing each piston to the top of the cylinder? 500 is pricey.

There is a thread DIY for valve retainers in the forum sorry I deleted the link and don't have it anymore. Best to use air pressure, thats the best way to hold the valves up, without taking head off.

Just orderd the kit from Hardtopguy. He said I can expect it the week of the 28th. I paid a little more (once you include shipping) but it beats waiting 3 months.

anyone know of a good place to get a reasonably priced valve spring compressor that doesn't require modification to the tool?
