Default Malfunction Indicator Lamp came on

Was driving home today and this bugger came on. It's the one that looks like an engine. Looked in the manual and it's called the Malfunction Indicator Lamp. Turned engine off, opened and closed the fuel tank but the light is still on.

Did some searches on this board and found out that it has something to do with either the emissions control or Lambda? I wonder if this explains why my fuel indicator is always off. Sometimes I'll go for drives and get more gas bars. I've also had my gas tank overflown twice because the stupid gas pump was broken.

Anyone else have this light come on too?

If it is the engine looking like, then that should be the check engine light.

Is your CEL on constant or flashing?

It could be as simple as a loose gas cap or something much worse.

Start off by fulling the CEL code(s) and see what it is.

Yea that's what I was reading from the post on this board. It could be something as simple as a loose fuel cap, or much worst. Thankfully it's not flashing, in which case I'd be in full panic mode.

People say that sometimes it'll go away after 3-5 drives.

Friend of mine is coming tomorrow with a OBD 2 to do a scan to find out the code. Guess I'll go from there. If it's something minor, I'll troubleshoot it myself. If it's major...knock on wood it's not, then I'll take it to a shop. It might be the o2 sensor...I've read that is a common problem. That's still gonna cost me if it is.

Speed Syndicate, I'm guessing they're an mechanic shop?

You may want to consider picking up an OBDII scanner yourself. You can find them online for about $50 if all you need to do is pull a code. And then you can keep the scanner. Most places charge at least that to do the diagnostic for you.

Yea it's not a bad idea. My friend is coming over tomorrow (had to tutor today) to pull the code. He's got a OBDII. Anyways, hoping it's just a matter of loose fuel cap and unplugging the battery will make it go away. Otherwise, I think I have some black tape somewhere that I can tape over the light.

why don't you fix the problem instead of taping over the light

Bring it to Allan at gearheads,

Scanning a code shouldn't be too much of a problem
