If you get good enough front speakers, power them with a decent amp and have a good head unit for a source, there is no need for rear speakers.

It can have a very negative effect on your centre stage and stereo imaging.

My Focal 165k3's are being fed 150 RMS off an Alpine HU and Zapco amp and often people will think I have a 10" sub in the back. That's when I turn on my 15" Utopia in the trunk and then they realize what a 15" sub in an S sounds like

An amp makes a WORLD of a difference. A head unit will average 25 RMS or so per channel. You can easily double that with an affordable & small amp.

I'm sure the rears do sound good, I hope I didn't come off as too harsh . I come from years of competing in sound competitions and building custom high end stereo setups so my opinions can be a little direct and biased.

Most people would be very satisfied with rears in the S, I'm just a 2 channel stereo type of guy .

i'm no expert either. all i can say is that when i sit in my car and listen to which speakers do the most sound come from, it's the one right behind my head. take it for what it's worth

Guys that's what you DON'T want. Rear fills are supposed to be just that... "fill". It should be at least 90% biased towards your front speakers.

When they mix albums in the studio, do you think they have speakers behind them? No. They have two studio monitors set up in front of them. Even in 5.1 setups, you'll notice that not much sound comes from the rears at all. I probably sound like an audio nazi here I guess some prefer to have sound coming from behind them as well

Taylor, I should let you have a listen to my front components when we get together at another meet and you can hear for yourself that you don't really need any rears at all... even with the top down
