^the chance is really really low as long as you check the weather the day before and it says sunny for both area. Plus most is pretty much highway and honestly if this is something to worry about, there's more to worry in this world.

Do the math. Even at $50 for the tires, add $15 for mount and balance on each wheel, that is $110. And you do not want to drive on the highway with wheels that are not balanced.

Say the new tires cost $600 cdn, at 12% taxes and 6% duty, that is $108 in tax and duty.

Something to consider.

I think some of you guys are being a little harsh. When I choose to change my tires, I don't wait until they are dangerous before buying new ones and I think most other people are they same. If I drove on my tires for one or two more days or even a couple of weeks, I don't think that would be a problem. If someone picked up a set of my tires that I changed, they would certainly be fine for a day trip. I don't think zero tread was meant to be taken literally, because there probably are not that many around...

If you do wait until your tires are unsafe, then you are being a little hypocritical in making your comments.

That said, I personally don't think it is worth the risk in getting caught crossing the border with undeclared items. Once you are tagged as a cheater, that stays on your record and crossing the border will forever be a problem. In addition, we may not like paying taxes, but we actually do benefit from them as a society...

As an aside, I really have to question the tone of some responses. Do you really gain anything from calling someone names in a public forum. If you feel so strongly about something, maybe a PM would be a better first step. While I have certainly said things that are questionable in the past, I have tried to avoid name calling because it just takes the forum to a really negative place. For the record, I don't think anyone who has said anything in this thread is a jackass. How could I make that kind of judgment without getting to know you first? Just something to think about...

i don't think most tire shops would mount tires on your wheels if they think it is unsafe.
