This is why I always take my tires and wheels separate from my car, and bring them to the tire shop. If alls you allow them to do is mount them, the risk factor of scratches and other problems goes way down.

I'd much rather put my own wheels back on with care. Even if they don't over tighten them they'll probably scratch them.

I worked in a tire shop for 3 years, I've witnessed the carelessness first hand.

They do sound tight, but your technique for loosening them isn't correct. Whacking on a long lever with a mallet won't break them free. Try an impact wrench or apply the pressure with your arms. The force of whacking with a mallet will be absorbed by the long lever and none of the force will be applied to the lug.

Get a good quality breaker bar (not the factory tool, and definitely not a torque wrench!), and put your pipe over it. That'll give you enough force to break 250 lbs of torque.
