Default 17" rims and S-02s

OK, I know this has been discussed, but I didn't see anything specifically about doing this...

I'm considering putting S-02s on some new 17s. (17 *7.5 and 17 * 9)

The stock tires, according to bridgestone, are :

front "205/55/16"
8.1" section width
7.1" tread width
833 RPM

rear "225/50/16"
9.2" section width
8.5" tread width
840 RPM

there are OEM (porsche) S-02s made in the following :

front "205/50/17"
8.3" section width
6.9" tread width
827RPM

rear "255/40/17"
10.2" section width
7.9" tread width
840RPM

I'm concerned because the tread width is actually smaller than stock, and the ratio front to back isn't quite the same. I'm wondering though, when mounted on a 7.5" and 9" wheel, could those tires really have such a small tread width? Has anyone tried this?

Thanks!

schwett,

I would go with some BF Goodrich T/A KD's.

225/45/17 - 6.9 inch tread width, 25 inch overall diameter
255/40/17 - 8.2 inch tread width, 25 inch overall diameter

schwett,

Whoh...I just saw how much the TA KD's cost.

1st of all...what are your plans with these 17's?

It is hard to beat the stock tire/wheel setup in terms of dry weather perfomance, unless you go R compounds.

those are pricey but not out of the question.

spirited driving, 90% of the time, and track use the other 10%.

wet performance isn't too much of a concern, i'll probably put s-03s on my stock rims and keep them around for the rainy season. i also don't have to drive unless i want to, so no biggie there.

i may also have a friend import some re-01s, but that could be a hassle. he's looking into it. anyone done that yet? any DOT issues?

(the reason i'm going to 17s is not for performance; but for aesthetics. i just don't like the stock wheels much. )

I just ordered S-03s in 225/45/17 & 255/40/17. Those were the size recommended for 17 x 7.5 and 17 x 9 rims.
