17s or 18s seriously
Define 'diminished'. With 18's and lower profile tires, the ride does get a bit rougher/harsher, but you get a better 'feel' for the road and more direct handling. Also, depending on how heavy your 18's are, you might also feel a loss in power due to the additional unsprung weight you just added to the car.
If you want the looks...of course 18s will be great! I would've gone with 18s but I can't afford the tyres!
I am very pleased with my 17" SSRs...performance decrease only SLIGHTLY noticable on the butt dyno...cornering feels slightly more steady and tigher due to the stiffer sidewall...

18's look great...but...
1. Tires are expensive
2. I believe the s2000 will handle better with 17's
3. There are alot more 17 inche tires to choose from
4. 17's will be more comfortable than 18's
5. I believe 17's are better for drag racing on the S2000
If I could do it all over again...I would go 17's.
17x7.5-17x8, +55mm
17x8.5-17x9, +65mm

Choice excellent my friend...
You will find heaps of pictures on this forum with 17s and 18s...
Just a word of advice, be careful with the offsets you choose...especially if you consider lowering the car like i will...heres a pic of my 17" SSRs with car unlowered...
In my opinion, 17" looks great on the car, but 18" could look better! Just dont have the $alad for rubber...

This week, I installed OZ Superleggeas on my new 02 Silver/Red. I went with 18X7's (+45) front and 18x9's (+55) rears with 225/40's and 255/35 Bridgestone Potenza Pole Position SO-3's. It's awesome!!!! No rubbing issues, no clearance issues, etc.
I "downsized" to 7's in the front to keep the wheel "under the car" and it worked great. The Tire Rack site recommends 8's (and interestinly doesn't even offer 7's as an option). I called OZ Corporate in Miami and found that the 7's were available and then called Tire Rack and they had them in stock??!!?? So I ordered the set and installed them this past Tuesday.
Can't really compare the performance as I literally drove the car home and installed the rims/tires that night!! So I only had 25 miles on stock tires and wheels (which I sold this week to a fellow S2000 owner and the proceeds will pay for my new Comptech exhaust!!!!
