Default AP1 wheel finish question

What type of finish do the AP1 wheels have?

Is the inside of the wheel (behind the 5 spokes) a machine finish?

I'm trying to clean several years worth of buildup from the inside surfaces of the wheel. I've had some good results with Griots Garage wheel cleaner, and I'm trying to determing how aggressive I can get with scrubbing the inside part of the wheel.

A Griots Garage rep suggested that IF the inside surface of the wheel is a machine finish, I could get some 40 steel wool, soak it in the wheel cleaner, and then scrub the inside part of the wheel to remove the last of the buildup that isn't coming off.

Thanks!

Dave

Immediately behind the spokes and around the hub the surface has ridges. The wheel hoop is smooth but not polished and doesn't appear to have a coating on it.

However, I think I would avoid the steel wool and just get it as clean as possible with a stiff plastic brush. If you absolutely must have it polished clean, I would consider having the wheel bead blasted and powder coated a color of your choice.

Go Gators...

I've started scrubbing with a sponge, and then tried the back side that has the rougher plastic surface. I'll try a scrub brush next. I don't want to go overboard and damage the surface of the wheel.

I had to travel to Gainesville this spring for work, right in the heart of Gator country!!! It was rough being a lone Buckeye down there... My hotel had a bunch of really nice framed pictures for sale - of Troy Smith getting leveled, Gator celebration, etc. I was forced to re-live the moment again and again!!!

I used the Griots Garage wheel cleaner with some scotch brite pads. It took some time, but when I was done I even got the old tape from the tire weights off.

For old tire weight tape, soak it in WD-40 and it just rubs right off.
