Default Help ASAP- R Compound Tires

I am looking for a set of R compound tires for AutoX. One problem is that I do not have an EXTRA set of rim to mount there tires on. My questions are, are these ok to be used on the street (to and from race)? How long do they last?

I am going to participate in about 20 rounds this year so that would be about 50 miles of autox racing and about 600 miles of normal driving to and from the track. Can a set of R compound tire last for this situation or I am dreaming.

And which tires are going to be best used for what I will be doing?

Thanks a million!!!!!!

Although it depends on which of the R1 tires you buy, you'd be lucky to get a season's wear out of one set (driving as much as you intend). I used to run BFG Comp T/A R1s and these lasted me approximately three seasons on a Porsche 944S2 (One season = 10-15 autoX events plus roughly 100 miles driving to and from each event). Before the Porsche I would be lucky to get one season out of the same brand and model of tires, but on an Alfa Romeo. I would expect that Hoosier's would have worn more quickly and Yoko 032s less quickly.

Like you I tried to avoid buying a separate set of wheels and ran on my S-02s last season. This year I'm taking the plunge and will buy new wheels and a set of Kumho VictoRacers. I'm hoping they'll last as long as the BFGs did on the 944S2!

If you are looking for longer tread life in a competition tire I would suggest the A032R or the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup. The A032R would not give you the handling of the Pilot but they would be a lot less money.
If I can help let me know.
Thank you

I drove a similar schedule to yours when I was autoXing regularly. I used 2-4 sets of tires a year and they weren't very competitive after maybe 4 or 5 events. The were BFG R1's on an '89 Corvette. I kept the tires on the Vette all the time due to a lack of spare rims, but I didn't drive the car much during the week. This was definitely detrimental to my competitiveness. There was a big positive difference when I was running on new tires. If you're planning on trying for a championship, I'd recommend that you find some spare rims or else run your car in street tire class. I'm running in street-tire class this year and I still expect to have to replace the tires at least once during the season. Tires are VERY important to your competitiveness. You really have to take care of them. Race tires don't like a lot of heat cycles and your grip level will degrade if you use them daily. I know this from experience.

We have not had a chance to test the tires yet. We are still expecting some snow this week. The only thing I can tell you is the customers that I have that have driven the tires say the Pilot Cup is as sticky as the Hoosiers but they last about twice as long. Given this information I would say the Michelin would be better than the Kumho for handling and they actually should last longer. The Pilot starts with 6/32" tread depth and they do not need to be shaved.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Fieryermine, I think you are right. In the long run it would cost me more money on tires by not spending money on an extra set of rims . I was just trying to save money due to the new house but screw it. I am going to get new rims and tires.

To Jim@Tirerack,

I am looking for a set of Rota Slipstream, gunmetal, 15x6.5 (5x114.3) for the Integra Type R. I searched on your site and could not find it. Do you carry them? will the 205/50/15 tires fit on these rims? What R compound tires should I get for Autox. Hoosier or Kumho. Will these last a season of autox? I am participating in 2 clubs so it's more like 2 seasons. I need these ASAP. First round will start at the end of this month. Thanks.

We do not carry the wheels you mentioned. Everything we carry is listed on the web site for your car.
I don't think you will get a full season on the 1 set of tires if you are running that many events. The Kumho will be longer wearing than the Hoosiers.
If I can help let me know.
Thank you
