star specs will handle real good and last but the kuhmo spt's will last longer with a little less grip. the two choices in the middle wont last too long, i hear they wear easy...

I pulled this from another site:

June '09 issue of Grassroots Motorsports tests six extreme summer performance tires under autocross conditions. Andy Hollis was the driver. Hollis described the winning qualities of the XS: "It is the complete package of inspiring turn-in, very high grip, easy modulation and good feedback."

Ecsta XS had the fastest mean time and the fastest quick time. Ranked from first to last:

Kumho Ecsta XS
Bridgestone Potenza RE-11
Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R (discontinued)
Toyo Proxes R1R
Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec
Falken Azenis RT-615

^So it grips great but lasts 5k miles.

I think the op is looking for a balance of grip and life, which is what everyone wants. The star specs aren't too bad. I'm pretty much done in the rear with about 6k miles on them and the front probably have another 6k or so left in them. I've read some reviews on here that people like the Sumitomos and they're cheap too.

Given what you said you were looking for I would lean toward the Sumitomo HTRZ III. They are not quite up to the Dunlop and Kumho for all out handling but they are better in the wet and they are going to give you longer tread life.
If I can help with the tires let me know.
