How crappy are my tires?
Hey Fellas
I bought my S a couple months ago and its been awesome
but my suspicion is that it has some pretty lame tires on it. Currently it has stock sized
Dunlop SP Sport 901 FMs
Anybody familiar with this tire?
They seem to break loose in turns a lot easier than the yokohama ES100s that I had on my 300ZX. Or perhaps its the extra power thats causing the loss of traction
The tread is still pretty good, but they just don't seem to grip
Any recomendations? Tread wear is important because I commute very long distances in my S.
Are the ES100s a good way to go?

I don't see any info on the SP 901's on tire rack...I see the Dunlop SP9000 which I have heard good things about.
What are you're sizes? If you're running 225 in the rear, than the tires are too narrow. The stock size says 225 but is actually closer to a 245 (see stickies). That could account for some "loose"ness may have to do with that.
The best tires for the S2000 are the stock Bridgestone Potenza S-02's. They're are expensive but (IMO) worth it. Other people seem to like Kuhmo MX and Fuzion ZRi as cheaper alternatives.

wow, if nobody's even heard of 'em they must be even crappier than I originally thought...its a shame to get rid of tires when they still have tread left, but if they're that lame I might have to
anybody know the treadwear on the S-02s?
How many miles can you get out of 'em? I drive A LOT on my daily commute...we're talking close to 100 miles round trip

i never had any experience with dunlops so no say here, but one thing for sure...if it breaks loose easier than es100, they are not the right rubber for the car.
average treadwear on stock s02s are 10k. depending on your driving habits, you can expect more or less. im a moderate driver, only vtec once or twice a week, and never peel out and my tires are almost at 11k and needs replacement.
if you drive A LOT due to daily commute, you might want to consider bit less pricey rubber such as kumho MX which is almost as good as the s02s yet affordable. IF you don't take the car to the track, autox, mtns etc., i personally would not go with the s02s or s03s.
also, try out the search button. good luck~

They are ultra high performance according to tire rack.

And not particularly great ones either apparently.

Since you drive 100 miles a day, you should looking for lower price tires that match your need, another good tire for less than half of S02-S03 is Fuzion ZRi.
One guy on this board tried Kumho ASX and he was very happy with it.
Either Fuzion ZR1 or Kumho ASX will lasted more than 15k miles and cost less than $100 each

I had them on my civic! :-D
They are pretty, and they were great for driving hard. But then again, it was a civic, and not a sports car. From the graph mentioned in the above post, even though they are not great with noise, you will notice that their performance is decent. Even though they came in 3rd, take a look to see just what that meant. They had plenty of grip.
Summation:
Don't use them on the S2000. You can do better.

I agree with the recommendation for the Bridgestone S-02 Potenzas.
They were the stock tire on my 2001 S2000 and I got over 36 Kmiles from the front and 18kmiles from the rears.
Replaced the rears with new S-02s from Tire Rack (225/50-16) and have lots of tread left after 20 kmiles.
The S-02 milage rating is 140, which equals 28 Kmiles and will go longer if you aren't sliding or autocrossing your car.
Definitely worth the money. They have very good traction and you should consider the extra value (priceless) of a better tire avoiding an accident.
