Why are open ended lugs nuts prefered to closed ended ones. Especially with extended studs?

Less chance of junk getting stuck in there, less chance of a long stud bottoming out on the crown of a closed nut, more thread engagement if the stud is sufficiently long. There may be more reasons, but those are the three that I'm aware of.
