This sticky should answer your question - as you can see, width of tire also figures in.

It might be easier if you told us what wheels your considering.......just a general rule, fronts would be about +48 and rears about +55 for a safe fitment without to much work. It will also depend on what size tires you want to run.

looking into some volks CE28N wheels. 18x7.5 for the front and 18x8.5. 225/40/18 for the front and 245/40 or 35/18 for the rear. hopefully this will help but what do you guys recommend without doing major or minor fender work to get it right. thanks

You shouldnt have a problem with those rim widths or tires without any fender mods. You will want to run 245/35/18's in the rear. I dont know what they are offered in as far as 18's, but the 17' recommended setup for the S is:

17x7.5 +50
17x9.0 +63

He just told you a couple of posts up on the page.

FRONT: +48 or higher
REAR: +55 or higher

With those widths you posted you'll be fine.

Based on successes and failures from many S2000 owners, we can use an offset calculator to figure out what other offsets and tires will work. These are minimum recommended offsets. You can use a higher offset if you want, and you will get additional fender clearance.

For the front:
6.5
