Default mounting/dismounting tires

I went to a used tire store to get my beater some tires for a good price.

I have had to go back many times to change tires; due to lumps on the tire. (3 times to be exact) The lumps were usually huge and half the width of the tire!

my question is if these lumps are because of improper mounting, or just bad tires. (used tires)...

also does balancing the tires correctly have anything to do with it?

I want to know because i plan on getting my winter tires put by this shop... its a ghetto shop, so he will give me a great deal on mounting... but im afraid he'll mess up the tires.

he will dismount/mount all 4 for $20 bucks.

When I was younger, I had some good success with used tires, and some experiences just like yours. That's one reason that i buy new tires now. Unless the technician was really abusive, it is unlikely that mounting alone was a reason for what sounds like tread separation.

yeah.. but do you guys think it would be ok for me to get winter tires mounted there? 20 bucks 4 tires is much better then 20 bucks PER tire.. =)

I think the problem was also jsut the fact the tires were bad...

what is tire separation though?

I don't know the technician and I don't know the shop, so I can't advise you there. Locally, I have found good, inexpensive shops.

Tread separation occurs when air gets between the belts or between the belt and the tread. This creates lumps and bulges in the tire - much like you describe. It means that the internal structure of the tire has failed and it should be replaced immediately.
