Default new tires for '04

ok so I've been researching this a bit, but i'm not sure if my assumptions/thinking is correct. The S-03s seem to be the best tire, however I've read if I get them I should get the 255s in the rear to offset the wider fronts, and help prevent oversteer...is this correct? Another thing is if i get the S-03s am I really going to need to worry about upsetting the suspension setup or whatever?

OR should I just not worry about any of this and stick with the RE050s? The only thing I didn't like about the RE050s was how fast they wear, so I'm hoping for a little more life outta these tires, and it seems the S-03s are just a better all around tire.

I'm now very interested in the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s...anyone know anything about these tires on the '04?

thanks ahead of time for the input.

RE050'S Is the better tire IMO.

If you go wider in the rear you will create more understeer which is better than oversteer but neither are good at extremes.

Why not go 225f and 255r if your going wider instead of just increasing the rear.

The only reason i was gonna go wider in the rear with the S03 is because I read since the contact patch on the S03 is so much wider in the front, you should increase the width of the rear to set off the difference. I'm not sure if that is correct thinking so that is just why i was curious.

thanks

Well if your research is valid then you have a very good point. I never heard about the contact patch issue with the S03's.

I've only heard about the width issue when switching from S02's to another cheaper brand.

Give it a try and tell us how you like the handling...

another one i just checked out is the Goodyear F1-GSD3...anyone have any input on these tires?

I know the rear contact patch is a bit less but I'm just curious if anyone has any experience with those tires?

I am about to try Dunlop SP Sportmaxx as I get through rear sets of RE050's in 4.5K miles just commuting and a bit of weekend road driving. Love the RE050's traction, just not the wear rate.

alright i'm curious about something else now. Sorry if I sound stupid or whatever but i'm trying to learn about this stuff. I like the Goodyear F1s but i notice the treadwidth is a bit narrower than the RE050s, but under the description for treadwidth on tirerack they say it's very difficult to compare different brands treadwidth, so I'm not sure how reliable that is. But if I went with a 255/40/17 in the rear and just the 215/45/17 in front what would that do overall to the car/speedo?

I have an '04 so that's not too far off from the stock setup. Thanks in advance for any info you guys can provide.

The change is speedo is going to be less than 1 mph off if even that. Not an issue.
