Hmm, I always was told, and figured, that sidewall numbers were measured height. I think I measured myself once and it proved correct... Maybe not. *shrug*

As far as the width goes..... I know it's edge-to-edge, but again, I was giving him a simple explanation.

golfnut, yer welcome.

If the difference between the stock OEM PP and "street" PP were factored in, I believe the Nitto would still be putting down more tread.
Russ, not sure if this makes a difference, but therein may lie your problem....

the OE tire IS NOT a PP (Pole Position) - a 225/50/16 SO-2 Pole Position is NOT the tire that came on the car - the car came with non-Pole Positions that are about the equivalent of a 245.

if you were to compare a PP S)-2 and the OE SO-2 in 225/50/16 - they would physically be different widths (i.e. measured width)

bridgestone makes both a PP and non-PP version (maybe not anymore, but they used to)

don't compare the nitto or any other tire to a SO-2 PP in like sizes.

someone chime in if they think i'm mistaken....

Again, as I have stated in other posts, careful attention has to be paid to the specific tire you are comparing the SO-2 with. What makes the SO-2's width (contact patch) wider than its stated size is the construction, and this applies to other tires as well. A Nitto NT-555 reportedly has the largest contact patch of any "ZR" rated tire, so switching to that tire will not result in the differences (225 to 245) you mention above.

OK Phantom, now you confused me (I think). Having always just gone to the tire stores and said ..... Replace my tires, I never gave tires a thought until getting this wonderful car. Now, you post the following:

"225/50/16 SO3's have a tread width of 8.3 inches on a 7 inch wheel.
245/45/16 S03's have a tread width of 9.1 inches on a 8 inch wheel.
225/50/16 S02 (stock) have a tread width of 8.5 inches on a 7 inch wheel."

Again, being totally ignorant on tires, how can a 245/45/16 SO3 with a tread width of 9.1 inches on a 8 inch wheel fit on a 7 inch wheel?

What am I missing? Kind of like putting 10 pounds of stuff in a 5 pound bag, at least it sounds like it to me.

Obviously, I am missing something here, so could you explain?

Thanks.

The S03 in a 245/45R16 will fit anywhere from 16X7.5 ot 16X9 wheels. They work fine on the rear.
If I can help let me know.
Thank you
