Default Poor selection of Tires for AP1 rims

The stock S-02's were destroyed on my Ap1 rims as I knocked off my alignment badly on a loooong business road trip. Bummer as I really don't have money to spend now on my S2K. Looking through tire rack there really are not many tires available that really get me excited in 16" and will work on the fronts. I really really really wanted the Star Specs but after needing an alignment and inspection etc I could not afford them and had to settle for the Kuhmo SPT's. Hopefully they will be close to the handling of the S-02's. I had intentions of tracking my S2k but have not gotten around to it yet and been spending more time with my other hobby involving laughing 62gr and 168gr projectiles between 50 and 1000yds. So I figure I'd settle for the SPT's. Right now I'm only putting the SPT's on the front since my rear S-02's have a lot of tread left.

They are being installed now and I'll have my S back this afternoon. Perfect day for a LONG drive and to see how the new tires handle.

48 tires available in AP1 sizes at Tire Rack:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchRe...er=16&x=72&y=10
10 of which are Extreme or Maximum Performance.

Add to that whatever Toyo, Falken, and other brands that Tire Rack doesn't carry.

Not too bad a selection, really...

Sure 48 tires in that size but reading reviews here and other sites not many get good reviews. And I'm not about to pay an insane amount of $$ for the S-03's.

I was really hoping to get a set of Azenis's as I've ran them on other cars in the past but they do not have a good size for the AP1 rim.

Of the tires on TireRack, any of the 225/50/16 tires in the "Extreme Performance" category will be better than the Azenis.

Max and Extreme Performance Tires in the list of 48 that rate highly:
Bridgestone RE11
Dunlop StarSpec
Yokohama AD08
B'stone RE050A PP
Conti ExtremeContact DW
Dunlop SP SportMax TT

Or in the UltraHighPerf category (a step down from OEM) you could have gone with the B'stone RE760, rated more highly than the Kumho SPT's you got which are in the same UHP category.

If you go on long business road trips, Azenis wouldn't be a good choice IMO. Agree w/ nmrado, better off on the RE11, StarSpec, or AD08, or any of the Max Perf tires I listed above.

I really wish I had the cash for the StarSpecs. Maybe the next set as I don't really see getting more than a year out of the tires. Granted my Azenis's were on a 1993 miata. With those tires it didn't have enough power to chirp them and it handled simply amazing. heavy though.

Star Specs are fantastic tires, particularly for the price.

The Conti ExtremeContact DW's are only $384, seems like a very good deal given the performance test results.

The SPT's you got should be just fine, for the most part. Sure, there are tires with better grip out there, but SPT's look to give good wet and dry grip for reasonable $$$. Tire Rack test: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...ay.jsp?ttid=97

that test is what really sold me on them. I have a set of Kuhmo's on my winter vehicle, a protege5 and they ahve been fantastic tires so I thought i'd give them a try. For some reason I just skipped right by the Conti's and now reading the reviews I might have gone with them.
