Default Question on 18" wheels and tires

OK forgive me but this may be a slightly stupid question.

First of all - do 18" wheels (say the SSRs) make the s2k any slower (because of added weight?

Also are the OEM version of the S02s available in a size to fit 18" wheels??

Thanks

The SSR wheel in the 18" will not make the car any slower. With the correct tire the car will acually have quicker turn in response and lateral stability. The SSR line of wheels are very light and strong. They use a forging process that allows them to keep the weight down and produce a strong wheel with nicer designs.
The S-02 OE tire would not be available in the 18" sizes. Bridgestone does make the nes S-03 Pole Position in 225/40R18 front and 255/35R18 rear.
If I can help let me know.
Thank you

Moneeb,

I don't think weight is an issue, but grip is.

You are going to have to find an 18 inch street tire that has the equivalent or better grip than the stock S02's. I don't know what 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 will do that for you (I am searching for my 18 inch Volks).

The one area that I guarantee that will slow you down is on the launch. If you run 18's (255/35/18 and less) against a stock S2000 with the stock tires...you will loose some time on the launch.

Both weight and weight distribution (i.e. moment of inertia) are detrimental to straight-line acceleration, and both tend to increase with rim size; that's why lots of guys buy 18s for "show" (street) and keep their 16s for "go" (track). However, the added grip available with wider, more aggressive tires can make up (in a "lap time" sense) for the extra weight.

Just buy the lightest ones you can that still look good to you.

I'll add weight, grip and Offset!

I've seen many poor handling cars due to some poseur putting on heavy, incorrect offset cheapo wheels with tires selected for looks vs. traction.

SSR's (and other lightweight wheels) might be a good choice, if you can get them in the right offset.

I have a question about 18'' rims too!

I live in brooklyn and drive my car alot. (100 mi/day)

I bring it into manhattan alot and there are alot of potholes and there is always construction going on. If I buy 18'' rims will I be at high risk of bending my rims with all this NYC driving. Would I be better off going for 17''. Or does it just depend on the quality of the rim.

I was looking to buy Mille Miglia Evo rims.

Its been taking me a while to save up for these rims so I cant afford to be fixing them all the time, or even worse, ruining them.

Any info would be appreciated

jcasta02,

Ahmman...if there is alot of potholes...and you don't want to be driving like grandmamma all the time....I wouldn't get 18's.

You can even dent 17's on a medium sized pothole.

Get 17's bro...
