Default Question for Jim: old tires

Hi Jim,

I have 4 oem tires that have been in storage for the past 5 years in my garage (Dunlops). Do tires 'deteriorate'? Or are they still useable?

Thanks,

I'm not Jim, but at a Porsche Technical Conference I attended this year, representatives from several tire companies (BF Goodrich, Pirelli... ) were in attendance at a forum and were asked how long tires could be expected to last. All of them replied that after 5 years a street tire has lived its expected life (3 years for a competition tire). They stressed that this didn't mean that the tire wouldn't hold air or that it would come apart, but that it would no longer handle as well as it was intended to handle. Jim might have a much better answer, but in the meantime...

Testnut is correct, the tires would still be useable but they may be getting harder from heat cycles and just sitting. You can examine the tires to see if there are any cracks in the sidewall or tread. If you are not going to be driving on the track I would think you would be OK.
Just check the tire over well before mounting and keep an eye on the pressures.

Testut,

Sorry, about the spelling. It has been a long day.
I promise I won't do it again.
