Hi Guys,

I have an 04 with the OEM tires on it and about 13k miles on them. I got a flat on my drivers side rear, should I just replace both tires or is it okay to replace one. The other tire still has decent tread left. Thanks in advance.

It all depends. Two months from now are you going to be asking "I have one tire at the wear bars but the other is OK, should I replace it or replace both of them?"

I'm assuming the damaged tire is unrepairable, otherwise that it the best option.

 

With 13k miles on them, I'd say just go ahead and replace both.

I put my S2000 into a curb last summer, and it required a new passanger rear tire (among other things). At the time, I only had 2,000 miles on the tires, so I only had the one tire replaced.

Now, after 9,000 miles on the old tire, 7,000 on the new one, it's getting close to time to replace them both

 

What does "decent tread left" mean? After 13,000 miles, it should be getting pretty low. Assuming (as Mike asked) the one is not repairable, you probably would be best advised just to get two new ones. Remember, also, aside from handling issues associated with one good and one well-worn tire, you may put undue stress on your differential if you have one tire with 12/32 tread, and one with 4/32 tread.

 

By decent tread I simply mean that visualy the tire is not thrashed or showing uneven wear or anything like that. I have never tracked my car but 13k miles is 13k miles whether is just commuting/casual driving or not. Thanks for the info guys, I'll be replacing both.

 

Replace both and keep the good one as a spare in case this situation comes up again soon.

I had this very same thing happen to me and this is exactly what I did. I clipped a water pipe sticking out of a curb and tore the sidewall of my tire. Now I have a spare just in case.

 

At 13K the other tire has to be worn. Just replace the two rears and like everyone else said keep the tire for a spare.
