first thing I do with every set of wheels I get...

remove the center cap.

some racing orgs won't let you on track with center caps, cause they can pop off and become debris...although unlikely, it's not unheard of.

The other thing is that they can melt with track temperatures.
Front rotors can get up to 1500 degrees on track. My front wheels can get so hot that I can't even touch them.

That's great for the track, but I don't think that's all what we're talking about.

So far we have:
- some aftermarket wheels don't come with them
- some people don't use them for track duty
- some people just don't buy them

My winter wheels don't have center caps, I just didn't bother since the wheels were painted black and I was too lazy/cheap to buy and paint a set of caps to go on my winter wheelset.

SCCA BMWCCA, & PCA Require center caps and trim rings to be removed for driving events.

I don't have any caps on my valve stems either.

Obviously, if they're not allowed on the track, it's understandable. But with strictly street driven cars, no center caps looks terrible and cheap. I don't understand how someone with a beautiful S2K can prefer rust (painted black does look better) and bare axle nuts. Before I bought my Volks, I was looking at some Works... but no center cap options was a deal breaker for me.

I don't like the look of it either, but I am going to guess it started as a theft preventative measure and blossomed into a fasion statement.

I dunno... I purposely stay stock to avoid attracting undue attention, vandalism and theft...

Meh, like I said, I do it with my winter wheels, and it's due to cheapness and laziness. Quite frankly, my beautiful S2000 looks pretty rough covered in salt and slush and with her chipped up winter wheelset on anyways, so it's not just the lack of center covers holding her back
