Default S02's WASTED after 6000 miles?

Hi everyone! I've been reading horror stories about the oem tires net getting alot of mileage, but just went for my first state inspection (car not quite 1 year yet and 6151 miles) and lo and behold - tires are FRIED!

Not that I do anything outrageous with the car. No dragging, no severe handling, but they are nearly as bald as a babies ass! The fronts are worn (no where near the rears) byt also show signs of severe feathering on the inside edges.

I have had my longest lasting tires on any vehicle i have owned as Bridgestones - and now by far the shortest lasted as well.

Even the guys at the bridgestone dealer said 6K was ridiculous!

Any suggestions for what to use now? Mostly commuting to work in summer and occasioonal road trips - but nothing too terrible.

Thanks!

I have the equivalent of over 10K miles on my SO2's. The fronts are like new and the rears are getting a bit worn on the inside, so it's time to re-mount them so I can wear on the edge that's still got the most tread. I hope to get another 10K out of the rears doing this and I'm thinking the fronts will be good for another 20K-30K miles more.
Although it's not uncommon for these tires to wear out as you have described, most have admitted to harsh use (cornering and accelerating). I'm not exactly kind to my tires but you might consider re-evaluating the pressures you use in them. I've found that upping the pressure to about 35 promotes better wear. You might have your alignment checked too. Your alignment might be off enough to cause excessive tire wear.

Thanks. I do keep the tire pressure high - running right around 37 psi. Alignment is within spec, as was just checked (due to the feathering on the inside edges) so I am stumped. Took up issue with Bridgeston, and they have been lukewarm at best. Taking to a corporate owned Firestone store now, at request of bridgestone, to see if tires are abnormal. Many people say the level of wear is highly unusual for the miles and driving style (dealer, tire dealer and even bridgestone rep) but no one is willing to say the tires may be the issue.

I know they are soft, but come on, 6000 miles! Talked to honda and they said they will keep info for engineers to see if they need to rethink the oem tires (like that will happen)

Wel. I will keep you all posted on my crusade!

With about 70-80 autocross miles, my first sets lasted me about 10,000 miles by the time they got to the wear bar - I drove another 2000 miles after that.

My second set had about 150 autocross miles and only lasted about 6000 miles before the outsides were too worn - the middle and insides had not even reached the wear bars.

I read this thread with interest. I just had to change my rear Potenza OS-2, and got what the dealer told me was the way better OS-3 for $170 each. I was shokced when my OS-2 did not pass inspection at 11,000 miles. They said that is just the way it is with rear wheel drive, high power car.

They wanted to sell me an alignment. I said no. What are your thoughts?

Also, local Baierl Honda in Wexford PA, north of Pittsburhg now has 5-6 stooks, new and used. what is market like? Is my Baby worthless?

Excellent point! I think you should expect this with the S2000. It was designed to be a car that could handle very well, not one that'll get you great tire wear.

Your dealer should have given you a free alignment at 11,000 miles. The Honda warranty says free alignments for 12,000 miles or one year, but, due to the low miles per year most of us put on our s2ks, most all Honda dealers waive the one year part, and just go by miles.

By the way, I have had very poor treadlife out of my OEM tires as well. AND, I got the free alignment at 8500 miles and 21 months. Guess what? my alignment was perfect! Now, i'm stuck with the mystery of why my OEM tires are below 2/32 all over, and my alignment, balance, and inflation have always been perfect!

Great car, if I could keep tires on her,
Richard

xviper:

Come on!

Now have you ever actually driven a K car? Massive torque steer and pull to the right with 80 hp? And you know what? those horrible cars went through tires even worse (dare I say it?) than an s2k!

Thanks,
Richard

It doesn't make sence to me. I have 21000 miles on my original tires. I take corners hard and have driven quite fast in the past. I occationally launch and do 0-60s. The only abusive thing I don't do is peel out. My tires look like they have 5000 miles left at least and they have worn evenly. The alignment hasn't changed either.
