Default Tire Failure

My wife had a near catastrophic tire blowout Saturday on my BMW. Probably the only thing that kept it from being a disaster was the offending tire was mounted on the rear. The tread seperated completely from the sidewall. All that was left on the rim were the two sidewalls. The separation thrashed the side of the car. I was able to rub out the majority of the paint damage but the bumper cover is going to have to be reshot. Just moments before the failure the DSC light flashed.

The tires were Nanking 225/45r17 90h. Has anyone experienced this type of failure before? My wife was only traveling about 60mph and the other three tires were inflated properly.

I'm off to buy a new set of Toyos, Mastercraft or Continentals with a V rating and get an estimate on the repaint.

It's good to hear that your wife is OK. That failure mode is consistent with running the tire at very low pressure.
