Can 255/40-17 tires fit on 17x8 wheels?

I was trying to search, but i had no luck... =/

 

They don't fit correctly. You really need a 17X8.5 to fit better. You would have to stretch the tire to make it fit. You would end up pulling the shoulder off the ground to get it to seat.
I would say not a good idea.
