Just to follow up on my last post about a year ago above. I ended up powder coating my CE28s in a color very close to Ti Silver. I mounted them with 225/255 Continentals and drove them for a very short period of time. Long story, but I was not happy with the set up for my type of driving. I decided to go back to 16" wheels and stock sized tires which I am much happier with.
I sold the Volks and bought a set of used 16" BBS JDM wheels. They are extremely light weight, about 12.5 and 13.5 lbs. front and rear. Not as gorgeous in design as the Volks, but they have a bit of an understated retro jdm thing about them which I like. I had them refinished, but this time i decided to go with paint rather then subject the wheels to the very high heat cycle associated with powder coating, and also to free myself up a bit as far as getting the exact color I was looking for. I ended up with a light hyper silver color that I like (its similar to Volk Formula Silver I think) and I am very happy with the results. I know it won't hold up as well as powdercoat - but - I'll live with that, and be careful. I am a 100% street driver and I live in a rural area so they don't see too much abuse. The car is garaged.
I think its possible that someday I might get another set of ce28s. I do like the look and performance of those wheels, just not sold on the 17". Right now I'm in a good place with these BBS JDM wheels. We'll see. If i do, I will either buy new, or if I buy used I'll have them painted, not powdercoated. Also, I'll use stock size tires, not oversize.
This is a shot of the BBS wheels. The picture makes the finish look a bit muted and satin in quality. In real life it is a fairly high gloss clear coat finish and it has a subtle sparkle that shows up a bit in the sun. It is exactly what I was looking for and I like the way it looks on my two ap1s (Sebring Silver and Silverstone).
