Default Winter Tires for AP2

Hi,

I am purchasing an 06 (with 05 rims on it) from New Mexico and driving it back to Philadelphia in a couple of weeks and want to have a set of snow tires shipped out there to have them put on before we attempt to drive it back. After doing a whole bunch of research on S2KI it seems that my best bet would be to get a pair of Dunlop M3's for the front (215/45/17) and a pair of Dunlop 3D's for the rears (235/45/17) since the stock 245/40/17's are $50+ more per tire. My question is, is the rear size OK, am I going to have any issues? Should I just pay for the 245/40's?

I also looked at 16" rims and tires but the ones for the AP2 are low performance tires. I looked at a non-staggered set for the AP1 that would probably fit, but they were very narrow (205/55/16) and seemed like it would cause handling issues.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thank you!
Matt

Either way, or you *could* run 3D's in 205/50-17 fronts with 235/45-17 rears and save a few more bucks, get a little more ground clearance, and keep something closer to stock stagger while going narrower for better snow grip.

???
I'm running 205/55-16 3D fronts with 225/50-16 M3 rears, both are V-rated, same as the 17" ones you're considering. Of course they're all "low-performance" vs. Summer tires... What do you mean by the comment that the 16" tires are "low performance"?

I agree with ZDan,

With the 235/45R17 in the rear the 205/50R17 in the front is going to be the better size. With the 235/45R17 and 215/45R17 you end up with a difference in height front to rear of 1/2"". It may be enough to throw off the anti lock brakes.
If I can help with the tires let me know.

Great idea. I just got "summer" wheels/tires from you (via Hunter ) so I can put snows on the OEM's. Narrower (OK, relative here) for the winter and not going to do hard cornering on snow tires anyway.

Going to wait some # of months for my purchase, however.

Jim,
The other thing is that the car is lowered 1" all around (Tein S Tech). Will I have an issue with the 205/50-17 fronts & 235/45-17 rears?
Also, how long will shipping take to Rio Rancho, NM (87124) and do you have any installers nearby I could ship the tires to?

As far as "Low Performance" the 3D's, LM-22's etc are performance snow tires, the ones for the 16" rims that come up in tirerack are basic snow tires (for minivans, suv's, standard sedans, etc).

Thanks for the help!!

Where are you getting this?

As far as I can tell, all sizes of the SP WinterSport 3D and SP WinterSport M3 are designed for the same audience and usage. Both tire models were: "developed for sports cars, coupes and sedans", for all the sizes they're offered in.

If you search for winter tire packages for a 2006 S2000 and select 16" rims you get two choices, Bridgestone WS60's (or something like that) and another one. Those two are the basic snow tires. The 3D's and other performance tires don't show up as an option (they only show up if you select an AP1 year, not for the AP2's). So basically the recommended 16" rim size for the AP2's per tire rack don't fit any "performance snow" tire. Only the studless snow and ice regular snow tires.

Jim,

Please see my post above about the car being lowered. If the tires will fit I will order them through you (once I figure out where I need to send them to).

Thanks!

Blizzaks rule the earth... At least the parts of it covered in snow! Just food for thought, but I haven't been snowed in yet here in Jersey

I had dunlops on my last s2k for winter, wasn't that impressed.
