could i run Bridgestone Potenza RE-01Rs in 225/50-17 and 245/40-17 or 245/45-17 without too dramatic a change in handling (AP2 stock rims)? i know to expect a bit more plow, but there is a great deal running on these right now.

245/40 is stock size for the rear, so going to 245/45 will give you some extra sidewall.
Having more tire width on the front and the same on the back will reduce understeer (plow).

just replaced tyres on my 2006 AP2. was running OEM RE050's on the stock 17 rims.
For new potenza 050's they wanted $475 for the front, and $410 for the rear - expensive!!!
Have put on new Bridgestone adrenaline RE-001 on all 4 corners (on stock 17 rims);
FRONT : 215/45 R17 ($240 AUD)
REAR : 255/45 R17 ($340 AUD)
Car is driving really well so far! just waiting for the slick part of the new tyres to wear off so i can give them a good and proper thumping around some twisty roads.
I'm glad i did some research first and read this post which informed me about the unusually narrow front OEM 050 which has helped me choose a great replacement tyre in a different model - at the tyre shop the guy wanted me to fit 245 on the rears as this is what the OEM 050 size was, but after explaining etc he put on the 255's for me.
Would definately advise anyone looking to replace their tyres to use the above tyre sizing if on stock 17 inch rims.

Why is everyone so keen on maintaining stagger on these cars? On my last car (BMW M3) the stock tire/wheel size was 17x7.5 front and 17x8.5 rear with 225/45/17 front and 245/40/17 rear. It understeered like a pig. I put 17x8.5 Kosei K1s with 245/40/17 all the way around and it greatly improved the handling. When I need new tires I'm planning on following a similar route with my S2k, more tire up front for less understeer.
