With RE-11A Gone, What is the Best AP2 Tire?
I was going to get the RE-11As. I waited until the spring since the car sits outside in the winter. But it is not discontinued, none at Tire Rack, not listed at Costco.
The RE-71R appears to wear much quicker, closer to the range of a Hoosier. It apparently also kicks up lots of pebbles.
What are the other options? The RE-11A seemed the better choice than the Hankook RS-3 or Dunlop DIrezza ZII Star Spec. The latter is supposed to be relatively rough riding and noisy. The car will be used mostly on the street. With the former it would seem I'm riding on my second choice (to the RE-11As).
Reviews of the Michelin Pilot Super Sports often complain that the sidewalls seen soft and the steering light and less crisp.
The tire has to be able to handle rain. It should last at least 5000 street miles and 10000 would be nicer. It would be nice if it was competitive at autocrosses.
Is the best option the:
RE-71R?
Direzza ZII Star Spec?
RS-3?
Pilot Super Sport?
Something else?

There were Direzza ZII Star Spec tires on my '06 when I bought it last summer. They did seem noisy and rough riding but I was totally new to the car. They were on horrible black wheels (nice wheels but black) and I put OEM wheels on the car and put new tires (RE-11A) at the same. No scientific data, go G-measurements, etc. but the Bridgestones are subjectively a much nicer tire. They work well in the rain the few times I've been caught out in it. I suspect the RE-71Rs will be as nice now that the RE-11s have suddenly left us. My S is a summer car and I really don't care if I get more than a couple of years out of the tires but daily drivers have other criteria. The Bridgestones have a wear rating of 200.
I freely admit to being somewhat of a Bridgestone fanboy for no other reason they've all done very well on my cars ranging from various Hondas, Subarus, and Expeditions and Explorers.

the tires you listed
RE71R
Z2 SS ( star spec )
RS3
+ BFG Rival S
all can handle rain and be competitive autocross tires. right now there is a lot of tire wars going on. look into the race and competition sub forum.
from experience the old BF Rivals from last year lasted a good long while, i dont know if they can keep up with the new tires pace though.

I've had a lot of street tires and for me the Michelin SS would be my choice... yes they may flex a bit but they grip and last with some comfort. I have RE11A right now and it performs when warm but is not my favorite.

Best tire depends on your goals. If you're competing RE-71R. If you're looking for longevity, Super Sport. If you're looking for a balance, RS-3 or Z2. RS-3 will be quieter, Z2 will handle better in the wet (not a night and day difference).

I was looking for a tire that should hopefully go around 10,000 miles, and still be competitive at the occasional auto crossing, so I did a fair amount of research. My choice was the ZII SS, and so far I am very happy with them (keep in mind I have driven less than 100 miles on them with no real spirited driving). The harshness and vibration aren't bad yet, but they are brand new still. Keep in mind my hardtop rattles, I have the AP1 clutch buzz, so I am not going to hear the tires unless they are really bad. Maybe I will notice more when I take the hardtop off and rack up some miles.
