I was set on getting the Dunlop M3 tires, as they (along with Blizaks) seem to be one of the most popular winter tires.
However, looking at the Tirerack website I see that they aren't available in the right rear size. I know some people go with 225's for the rear in winter for better snow traction, but we don't get much snow here, so I just want something that handles good in the cold and can handle the occasional light snow without compromising the dry performance (as I would be if I went with 225's).
So, what are my options for winter tires as far as keeping the 245 rear?

They're "winter" tires. They won't perform like summer tires anyway. Regardless of size, dry performance will be compromised.

I understand that, what I meant to say is I don't want to further hinder dry performance by going with skinnier tires in the rear. Sorry for the mix-up.

a narrower tire is better in the snow. I would go with the 225.

I think what you really need to look at are "all seasons M&S" tires. Any dedicated "winter" tire will sacrifice so much in dry performance, that the difference between 225 and 245 will be quite indistinguishable that it would be irrelevent. You can't have both snow/ice traction and dry road performance even remotely close to a dedicated summer performance tire. You're picking nits.

Alright, looks like I'll be going with the 225 Dunlop M3's (perfect timing, even a $50 rebate on them). Thanks for your help.

The 225/50R16 rear tire in the M3 would work well. They are a very good handling snow tire. Nobody makes a snow tire or an all season tire in the 245/45R16. Dunlop does have a 50.00 mail in rebate on a set of four at this time.
