Tire recommendations for stock '07 S2K
My '07 has so few miles on it that I'm worried the OEM tires are going to turn to dust soon. Car has always been garaged & tire pressure meticulously maintained, but they'll be 10 years old this year - albeit with only 12k miles right now - and I'd hate for one of them to explode rolling down I5 at 80+ mph.
I'm looking for a good all-around tire that a good compromise in comfort, grip, and longevity. I like to drive fast but nowhere near the car's limit, except maybe once/twice a year at an autocross.
Thanks in advance for recommendations!
***UPDATE
Thought some of you might be interested in an update on this. I went with the Michelin Pilot Super Sports & have put about 3K on them so far in a variety of conditions. Here are my impressions:
1. Much softer sidewall that the OEM Bridgestones. A lot better ride quality, but no where near as crisp on turn-in. Have not autocrossed them yet, but have played with pressures & behavior on the road doesn't seem to change much. currently running 32PSI all-around.
2. Less than stellar grip in poor weather, although that's a fairly minor issue since it's not my winter car. Let's just say 'thank Buddha' for the VSA on an icy local road a couple weeks ago. Saved my butt twice in the space of 200 yards.
3. Overall, I like these tires but don't really think thy're worth the Michelin price premium. Will likely go with some class of Yokahama/Avid next time, as I've had great luck with them on my other vehicles.
4. And, as always, TireRack.com is great. Especially like the option to have the tires shipped directly to your local installer.

imho the best tires i have owned on my s2000 are the tires I have now, and they also came stock on my M3, Mich pilot sport series. the tire is the only thing between the road and me, influences all aspects of driving, stopping etc....and I want the best .....

For the street and moderate driving style, the Continental DWs are great tires, and you being in Cali, I dont see much of a need for an all season. DWs have decent grip, great life, quiet and are excellent in the rain. They are also ridiculously less expensive than the Michelins, real world testing results between the two can be found here: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...y.jsp?ttid=140 DWs placed 1st, Pilot Sport placed 3rd.
More recent testing against other tires...DW still on top! http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...y.jsp?ttid=190
Run a 225/45 tire in the front and 255/40 in the rear. The added contact patch is a nice feeling

Michelin Pilot Super Sports are FAR superior to Conti DW in terms of noise, responsiveness, and longevity. Grip in wet and dry are at similar levels. I've had both on the same car.
They're not that much more. They come in 225/45/17 and 245/40/17. So...slightly "off" from the stock size, but you'll be fine.
I don't believe they come in 215/45/17 or 255/40/17. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Pilot SS is different than a pilot sport, BTW.

I am also not a fan of the Conti DWs.
As for size, stick with the stock 215/245 - the car will feel more lively.
I kept a diary of sorts on tires and thoughts - https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/326...st__p__7872240

Michelin PSS on car for almost a year. Very nice tire. Even handles fairly well in the wet. Quiet, smooth ride. Good wear, so far.

I've been anguishing over replacement tires for my '06 the past couple of months as my Bridgestone RE-11A tires are nearing the end of their useful life. Tires before those were Dunlop Direzza ZII Star Specs, another "extreme performance" summer tire which I thought was too noisy for my driving.
I'm considering dropping down to "max performance" summer tires and the Potenza S-04 Pole Position tires are on the list. Especially for rain and hydroplaning resistance.
Tire opinions run the full range from "crap" to "best tires I've ever owned" for just about every tire discussed on the forum. If only Bridgestone hadn't dropped the RE-11A...
