you wouldn't want to do that because your ABS would be thrown off. ideally you would run the 225/45/17 with the 255/40/17 in the rear.
that would also give your car a raked look...

I didn't think there would be that much difference since OEM tires are:

Front
Bridgestone RE 050 P215/ 45 R17

Rear
Bridgestone RE 050 P245/ 40 R17

basically the only difference I see is (highlighted in red)...

Front
P215/ 40 R17 (OEM is 45)

Rear
P255/ 40 R17 (OEM is 245)

I guess alittle is alot than huh? Being that the difference in width by 10mm in th e rear and in thickness by 5mm, this will still throw off the ABS? What about those with aftermarket 18's or super wide 17's? How do they get by or bypass the ABS issue?

Anymore feedbacks would be awesome.

The second number given in a tire's dimensional spec is the aspect ratio, or sidewall height as a % of the width. Thus, going from 215/45 to 215/40 means each sidewall is losing almost 10mm, for a total diameter change of 21.5mm, or more than 3/4 of an inch. Whereas changing the width, so long as it doesn't rub, will have little to no effect on the abs and other senors, and the resulting change in diameter is negligible (10mm extra width, times aspect ratio of 40 is 4mm extra per sidewall, or a little more than 1/4 inch total diameter change.

philbert is correct. Those sizes would throw off the antilock brakes. You could conceiveably run 215/45R17 and 255/40R17. This would be a lot closer to the same height.
