My friends give me crap because I use SMS all the time. Not like 100s per day, but usually a few messages per day. There are a lot of reasons, but the main ones are privacy and courtesy. I can text message someone and say anything I want/need to say without everyone around me hearing it. That's a win-win situation - the nosy people around me can't listen in to what I want to be a private conversation, and those that don't care don't have to listen to me talk on the phone.
Also, I can SMS internationally for no charge... calling gets expensive quickly.

I use over 3000 texts in a month!! which means i use more texts than i use minutes. Text messaging is great...you can get to the point without all the small talk and still do whatever you need to do without picking up the phone.
