The Age of Empire series is the same type of game, real time strategy, but set in historic time periods. AoE has myriad different Empires with only a couple unique units; the majority of the units are the same Empire to Empire.

The Civilization series are turn based strategy games focused on building cities (which can then build miltary units, buildings, and rsources); every Civ has one unique unit which offers a marginal advantage for a certain time period of the game and every Civ has 2 properties (from a group of 6?) that affect how certain things get built. Much more time consuming, a game can take anywhere from an hour to 20 hours to finish (and htat's assuming you survive to the end!).
