Getting Serious

For most, a stock FK8 Honda Civic Type R is enough to make a fun track toy, right off the showroom floor. And there are plenty of aftermarket parts available to make them even better. But if you're in the market for something a little more serious, Honda Performance Development (HPD) has developed a full, turnkey solution for pro racers and those wishing to become one.

Parts From Everywhere

The Civic Type R TC starts out as a body-in-white produced at Honda's English plant, which is then mated with a turbo K20C1 from Ohio. The cars are then assembled by Gradient Racing in Austin, Texas using a host of aftermarket and HPD racing components developed in-house.

Exterior Changes

This process, of course, saves racers the time and money it would require to build their own race car. Which figures to be quite a bit of both. And the mods list is a nice read as well. It includes a high-flow front grille and a J's Racing FRP vented hood on the outside, for starters.

Performance Wise

Performance-wise, you'll find such goodies as a CSF-designed radiator and oil cooler, an HPD/Borla downpipe and turbo back exhaust, 6-speed manual transmission with high-strength 3rd and 4th gears, an HPD/Cusco limited-slip differential, HPD Girodisk 2-piece front brake rotors, and HPD brake inlet ducts.

Ready to Race

The cabin is all set for the track as well, thanks to an HPD/Pyrotect bolt-in FIA 16-gallon fuel cell, a welded multi-point racing cage, and an OMP racing seat with a 6-point harness. Altogether, the TC is spec'ed out for SRO TC Americas Touring Car competition. It's also eligible for select NASA and SCCA classes.

Fine Print

Honda's hot Civic Type R is available exclusively through HPD to Honda Racing Line members (a club where members get factory support and direct access to HPD racing parts) who possess racing licenses in North America. The cost? A cool $89,900. This seems like a lot, but we must also consider the cost of acquiring all these parts and installing them ourselves, which is significant.

Trickle Down

Regardless, the TC Type R is a seriously cool machine, and it's just further proof that Honda is serious about racing. After all, HPD already sells a TCA-class Civic Si and TCR-class Type R. And as we've seen in the past, these efforts will only benefit those of us driving regular old Hondas, thanks to the good old fashioned trickle-down theory.
