Ryan Mahoney: S2000 Kingpin (Photos)

1. Introductions

Meet Ryan Mahoney, self-professed Honda enthusiast and track day junkie. As a matter of fact, when he first saw an S2000 he was just 17 years old and driving an EJ8 Civic. Right at that moment, he swore to himself that he would one day own that car. As fate would have it, that day came faster than he could've imagined. The Civic he owned would soon be the recipient of a motor swap that he was saving up for on the side. That is, until it was rear ended and totaled. Now, without a car and a nice pile of cash in his pocket that consisted of the insurance payout and motor swap fund, he went ahead and bought his first S2000. That's right, his first one when he was 17 and now he's on his fourth at the age of 24.

2. Clean and uncluttered

Jumping to his fourth S2000 that you are looking at above, is a 2008 CR that was built by Ryan to be a hardcore time attack weapon." I wanted to build something that could represent the website well and also be a great track car. I used to care about car shows, but now I really only care about improving lap times." With this being Ryan's fourth, it came together quickly as he knew just how he wanted the car to look and feel. Underneath the bonnet, you'll see that Ryan stayed true to Honda's formula of less is more by installing a big GruppeM carbon-Kevlar intake, Comptech strut tower brace feet, yellow valve cover, anodized black ASM Race Spec catch can / battery holder and an S2Carbonworks coolant reservoir tank. Helping to keep things working as efficiently as possible are a Berk Technology HPC header, Cusco radiator cooling plate, and black Samco rad hoses.

3. The exterior

There is something unequivocally cool about a black car, but you have to be careful to not let the details of the car get lost due to the darker shade. So Ryan threw in yellow accents by way of custom yellow time attack style lip to his Volk CE28N as well as the J Racing tow hook set on the front. To lower things down to a better handling point while also getting rid of wheel well gap are KW Variant 3 double adjustable coilovers working with T1R anti-bumpsteer kits on the front and rear and a full range of GTSPEC chassis braces. To bring things down to normal speeds while out racing are a Project µ front BBK and rear B-Force brake pads. The rotors and brake lines come by way of the good people over at StopTech.

4. The interior

For the cockpit of the CR, there is the continued theme of clean yet functional resonating across everything you see above. Recaro Pole Position seats with Schroth six-point harnesses to hold driver and passenger alike firmly in despite the twists and straightaways that the S2000 will travel through. Neo Artis steering wheel that holds the same yellow stitching that can be found in the custom upholstered door panels in black suede. According to Ryan this car never leaves the garage unless he's headed to the track or out to an occasional autocross.

5. All four of them

We'll say that Ryan and his friends Kris and Dustin did a hell of a great job making a truly enviable S2000. In case you're wondering just why Ryan would bother making a track car so nice looking, he has a simple answer for you: "What is the fun in having a fast car if it looks like a piece of junk?"
